As the World Cup begins on 11 June, many people will be looking forward to enjoying the tournament with family and friends. However, evidence from previous football competitions shows that major sporting events can coincide with a significant rise in incidents of domestic abuse.
Research by Lancaster University found that reported domestic abuse incidents increased by 38% when England lost a match and by 26% when they won or drew. Factors such as alcohol consumption, drug use, gambling, heightened emotions and financial pressures can all exacerbate existing tensions and increase the risk of abuse.
As a church, we want to be clear: domestic abuse is never acceptable. The Methodist Church takes a stand against domestic abuse and is committed to creating communities where people are safe, valued and supported.
If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, help is available. Please speak to a trusted person, contact a safeguarding officer, or reach out to specialist support services such as the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.
